The Importance of Fatherhood in Raising Successful Children

Children look at their parents for love, support, guidance, and much more. What their parents are teaching them is important because it’s what they internalize and take with them out into the world. Having a father, or father figure, in their lives is one of the ways children learn valuable lessons about others.

But not all children have a father in their lives. In those cases, male involvement from an uncle, grandfather, or other man in their family or neighborhood can provide a role model to look up to.

Father Engagement Has Value for the Majority of Children

Except for cases where there is neglect or another serious issue, children benefit from father engagement. They see their father as a provider and role model, and someone they can look up to. When they interact with their father, they learn about self-awareness, empathy, trust, and other important relationship dynamics.

Emotional and social intelligence is also part of the learning experience children have when their father is engaged with them and involved in their lives. Learning to trust and bond with people, and learning how to have empathy and compassion for others can all come from a strong level of father engagement during a child’s formative years.

Male Involvement Can Include a Role Model or Other Provider

For children who don’t have father engagement in their lives, other male involvement can still be beneficial. Not every child is fortunate enough to have their father as part of their family unit due to divorce, death, or other reasons. Another role model, such as a stepfather, uncle, big brother, or even someone in their neighborhood, can help them learn the lessons they need for life.

No matter the official title or relationship of a role model in a child’s life, male involvement provides an important opportunity for bonding and growth. If they have a provider they can rely on and trust, they can feel safe expressing themselves and explore their world.

That’s not to say that mothers don’t provide very valuable support and guidance for their children. But father engagement or other male involvement provides an additional role model for children to learn from.
